The Production
Experience Mozart’s comedy in the open air at Crowhurst Place on the Big Wood Estate — a rare chance to enjoy Barefoot Opera’s vivid ensemble style against the backdrop of a historic Tudor mansion and its grounds.
Directed by Jenny Miller with music direction by Lesley Anne Sammons, the production continues Barefoot’s long collaboration with Oscar Castellino, who returns as Guglielmo.
Synopsis
Two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, boast about how faithful their fiancées are. Don Alfonso proposes a bet to prove otherwise. The men fake a departure for war, then return in exotic disguise. With Despina’s help, Alfonso engineers a series of tests — including a staged poisoning — that begin to soften the sisters’ resolve.
Despina encourages the women to have a little fun. Dorabella falls for the disguised Guglielmo; Fiordiligi, after a prayer for forgiveness, eventually falls for the disguised Ferrando. Alfonso wins his bet. The “war” ends, the disguises drop, and all six characters confront the complicated truth about human nature and forgiveness.

A longtime associate of Barefoot Opera, Oscar shares the Guglielmo / Ensemble casting with Isaac Conibear in this summer’s production.
